Hey man! How are you doing? What was the best part of your day so far!?
I’m doing GREAT! I’m young, healthy, happy, my family is fine, and my homies are better than ever! So far my day has been pretty uneventful. I was supposed to go and get Ramen with one of my favorite people, but plans fell through and now I’m under two blankets eating granola bars and watching the punisher. I'm not going to lie though these granola bars SLAP and i’m super cozy, so this is definitely the best part of my day.
How did you get into music? What kind of genre/s do you listen to? Favorite “Feeling myself” song?
Growing up my parents would put me in any activity possible to one, get me out of the house because I was A LOT as a kid (still am now) and two, in hopes I would find something I was good at, because my brother was a genius, and was great in school, and I was looking like a lost cause because I was bad at every sport I tried and was never number one in my class. My Mom would always say the only thing I did was hum, soon enough that turned into singing, and when my brother introduced me to the world of music from punk rock, to rap I was sold. Now I mostly find myself listening to rap, alt rock, r&b, and stuff that I honestly can’t put a genre to. The song I listen to get me feeling like that man has to be “walk,” by Comethazine, THE LYRICS SAY IT ALL.
Any artists that inspired you? What was so inspiring about them? Favorite decade of music?
This question could take days to answer because there’s so many for me, but I’ll try to narrow it down to the ones that inspired me the most. Tyler, the creator is an artist I always refer back to when I need a push to get back in my bag because he is almost all I want to be; artist, entrepreneur, designer, and creator. I probably gave the cherry bomb documentary the majority of its views because it’s one of the most inspirational things to watch for me because it shows exactly where I want to be someday. Another inspiration of mine is Fela Kuti, he was a true rockstar, and king. He was one of the first african Icons, and his stage presence was literally INSANE, his shows looked like seances. But not only was he a great performer, he was a great activist, and he really wanted the best for his people. Those are the two I felt the need to explain but my honorable mentions would have to be; Michael Jackson, Freddie Mercury, Jay Z, Kanye(before the nut shit), N.E.R.D, Frank Ocean, Blood Orange, Asap Rocky, Goldlink, Travis Scott, Toro y Moi, Elvis, and Young Thug. Out all decades it would have be the decade now, I know that sounds super musically uneducated of me but I really like the music coming out right now.
What kind of genre would you describe your music to be? How does your music relate to you? How do you get yourself inspired? Your songwriting process?
I get this question a lot, and it is always so hard for me to answer. I usually just say it’s a mix Rap and R&B, but if I could just say I make “ Saint Sinbad music,” I would because I see it as its entity with no clear cut label. My music relates to me because it come from ME. I can give you a backstory to every song I’ve written because I know the songs that stick are the ones rooted in truth. When I first started making music I was hard for me to get that because all the musicians that were popular were writing about crazy, and extravagant lifestyles. So I thought that was what I needed to do if I wanted people to like my music too. The thing that I didn’t know was that people aren’t attracted to the chains, and fast cars - they’re attracted to the truth behind it, and once I figured out that all the popular artist were doing was telling truth I realized that my reality is VALUABLE no matter what.
This is pretty morbid, but when I need inspiration I think about my death. I think about how will I be remembered, and that thought is all I need to push myself to work as hard as possible so I touch the lives of as many people possible. I also think about my family, and friends because I want to give them the world.
What kind of family did you grow up in? How has that influenced who you are today?
I have the best family that kid could ask for. My parents are from Gambia, and they came to America in 1994 to make the lives of me and brother the best possible. To them that life consisted of us growing up to be lawyers or doctors, so telling them I wanted to do music was a little moment of schism, but now that they see me making it happen they’re more supportive than ever. My brother is 7 years older than me so he influenced me a lot growing up. He got me into skateboarding, and music for the most part, so I love him to death, and he deserves the world. All in all I love my whole family and my family is Huge I have funny aunts, boujee aunts, dramatic aunts, crazy uncles, rich uncles, broke uncles, and too beautiful grandma whom I love dearly. I actually promised to buy them both houses when I was 10… I’m working on it though.
